How somebody becomes one

CLC examinations in conveyancing law and practice, or probate where the licence extends to it, plus supervised practice; a licence is issued annually and names the permitted activities.

How to become a licensed conveyancer — the full route, what it costs, and how many people joined the register in each of the last ten years.

What they may lawfully do

Licensed conveyancers may carry on 3 reserved legal activities under the Legal Services Act 2007.

What the CLC says

FigureSourceProvenance
1,520 conveyancers; separately, 203 practices with 1,825 active CLC lawyers
two incompatible figures from search snippets, neither found on clc-uk.org; recorded as UNVERIFIED in the estate's research
CLC secondary

“Secondary” means the figure was recorded from somewhere other than the body’s own page and has not been checked against it. It is marked because a table is exactly the format that makes an unchecked number look like a measured one.

In law, and in Parliament

94 documents on legislation.gov.uk mention this profession, 21 of them Acts, the oldest from 1974. Hansard records 298 contributions mentioning it, across 4 whole debates.

Every Act and instrument that mentions them, what was said in Parliament, and what each search phrase catches by mistake — or the same for every profession here.

What the annual reports say

This site has 2,428 entries from the public register. The CLC’s own latest published figure is 2,064 — licensed conveyancers, 31 March 2026 — a difference of +364.

The CLC's figure counts individual licences. This site's register includes people the CLC publishes who do not hold one in their own name. Neither number is wrong: they count different things on different days, and nobody publishing either one says which. CLC - Key Indicators Q1 2026.

How the regulator itself is rated. The Legal Services Board oversees every approved regulator and rates each one against three standards. In 2025 it rated the Council for Licensed Conveyancers: well-led — partial; effective approach to regulation — sufficient; operational delivery — partial. The assessment, and every regulator’s rating side by side.

Read from the regulator’s own annual reports and core metrics. A gap in a run means the document that would carry it is not on the regulator’s site, not that the figure is zero. All 157 reports, with the sentence each figure came from.
