Accessibility
The Assize aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. This statement covers this site; the publisher’s own statement for its corporate site is here.
What you should be able to do
- zoom to 400% without text being cut off or needing to scroll sideways to read a sentence;
- use every page, including search, with a keyboard alone;
- use a screen reader or speech recognition throughout: the pages are headings, paragraphs, lists and data tables, in that order, with no custom controls to learn;
- read it with your own font, size and colours, and with your device’s light, dark and reduced-motion settings;
- read it with JavaScript turned off. Every page is static HTML. Search is the only thing that needs JavaScript, and it is the only thing that stops working.
There is no video, no audio, no animation, no carousel, no modal dialogue, no cookie banner and no advertising, so none of the usual barriers those bring is here to be fixed.
Known limitations
- Wide data tables scroll sideways. The comparison of all the professions, and some of the tables of figures from annual reports, have more columns than a narrow screen can hold. They are kept as real tables with real headers, which a screen reader can navigate, rather than being broken up into something that reads more easily and loses the relationship between a row and its column heading. On a phone this means horizontal scrolling inside the table.
- Search needs JavaScript and runs against a file of about a megabyte, which is a slow first load on a poor connection. Everything search can reach is also reachable by browsing, from professions and the indexes it links to.
- Some quoted material is an image of text in the original. A few regulators publish figures only inside charts. Where a figure could not be read as text it is not published at all, and the page says that rather than reproducing the picture — so there is no unlabelled image here, but there are gaps, and that is why.
- Link-preview cards served at
/og/are images of text, generated for social media previews. They are never part of a page’s content and nothing on the site depends on reading one.
Telling us about a problem
If something here is hard to use, or you need a page in a different format, email enquiries@assizedata.co.uk. You will get a reply within five working days. If a figure or table is the problem, say which page and we will send the underlying numbers in whatever form is useful.
If you are not happy with the response, the complaints procedure applies to this as to anything else published here.
How this statement was prepared
By the publisher’s own assessment of this site against WCAG 2.2 AA, using keyboard-only navigation and automated checks of the generated markup. It has not been audited by a third party, which is said plainly rather than left to be assumed. It is reviewed whenever the site’s templates change.
