About The Assize
A publication about the legal professions of England and Wales that nobody writes about, edited by Rose Traviss and published under the Assize News imprint.
Assize News is a trading name of Assize Data Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 17510115. Registered office: c/o IWN Accountancy, The Echo Building, 18 Albert Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1BZ. The Assize is an independent publication. It is not a court, tribunal or government body, and it is not part of or endorsed by one.
What it is for
Solicitors and barristers are covered by a trade press. The other professions are not, and they are not small: 9,151 people are held here from 5 registers, doing work that in four cases it is a criminal offence to do unauthorised. Each regulator publishes a register and none of them publishes a figure comparable with another’s, or links to another’s register, or says what any of the others may do.
So the one thing this site does that no regulator does is put them side by side: the comparison, who may lawfully do what, and the professions with no register at all, which is the fact most likely to matter to somebody choosing an adviser.
What it will not do
- Rate, rank or score a practitioner, or carry reviews of one.
- Take a listing fee, sell a lead, or let anybody pay to appear or to be removed. Removal is free and unconditional either way.
- Publish a practitioner’s direct telephone number, email address or photograph, all of which several of these registers publish.
- Publish anything derived from court listings.
- Give legal advice, or tell anybody which adviser to use.
- Build pages for solicitors, barristers, chartered legal executives or judges. Those have their own records elsewhere.
How to hold it to this
Every figure on the site is computed from the register snapshots described on methodology, and every figure that is not is attributed to whoever published it, with the sentence it was read from and a link to the document. What is done to keep that right, and what is refused, is set out in full at editorial standards.
If something here is wrong, say so and it will be corrected and logged: corrections. If you would rather complain, the procedure and its timescales are at complaints. If you are named here and would rather not be, that is unconditional and free. Anything else: enquiries@assizedata.co.uk.
